Animal Control DivisionAnimal ShelterThe Council Bluffs Animal Shelter is open weekdays from 1:00 pm-5:00 pm. We are open on Saturdays 12:00-4:00 pm, and closed on Sundays..
The first faces that you will see when visiting the shelter is one of the Clerk/Typists or Division Secretary. They will direct you to the appropriate kennel, answer your questions, license your dog or cat, and fill out lost/found reports. They also do all of the filing, answer your phone calls, and dispatch officers. If you would like to see an animal out of its kennel or have questions about the animal, one of our Animal Control Officers will assist you. The primary duties of staff at the shelter includes cleaning and disinfecting kennels every day, providing food and water for the animals, cleaning the shelter prior to opening, vaccinating animals and assisting visitors. The Animal Control Officers' duties also include enforcement of animal control laws, rules and regulations, picking up strays _d unlicensed animals, investigating nuisance, animal cruelty, and complaint calls, locating and quarantining animals that have bitten a human or other animal, issuing verbal or written warnings and citations, setting cage traps for animals, appearing in court, vaccinating animals, euthanasia, public education programs, inspecting catteries and kennels, keeping detailed records, operating tranquilizing equipment; and assisting the Kennel Attendant. The Council Bluffs Animal Shelter offers pet cremations and micro-chipping services. Micro-chipping provides an undisputable means of identifying your pet. Donations are always accepted at the Animal Shelter. Another method of providing additional support to the animals is by purchasing an item from our "wish list"., For more information contact Galen Barrett at 328-4656. Council Bluffs Save Our Local Animal ShelterSOLAS was started in 1993 by Mike and Mary Jones and a small, but hardworking group of volunteers. The purpose of the group is to assist in the care and placement of the animals at the Council Bluffs Animal Shelter. Volunteer support has included painting the shelter, bathing and grooming animals, walking dogs, and providing foster care for animals who are either injured or too young to place for adoption. Members of the group also speak at various organizations, promote public awareness and pet owner responsibility, participate in parades, and photograph animals available for adoption and place photos on posters in local stores.
